In contingent workforce contexts, an MSP is a company that manages a client's contingent labor program end-to-end: sourcing suppliers, managing the VMS, ensuring compliance, and reporting on spend. MSPs enable enterprises to consolidate hundreds of staffing suppliers under one accountable partner.
MSPs typically operate under a VMS (Vendor Management System) that routes requisitions to a supplier network, tracks worker lifecycle, and enforces rate cards and compliance rules. Strong MSPs also handle direct sourcing, workforce analytics, and market-rate benchmarking. Mid-market companies often adopt lightweight MSP models rather than full enterprise MSP programs.
